How to recognize burnout

“Rest cures tiredness. Burnout is what remains after you've rested.”

Burnout has three measurable dimensions — exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced efficacy — and a body-level signature that shows up months before you'd call it a crisis.

Burnout is diagnosed late because its first symptom is not noticing.

What nobody tells you

  • Burnout isn't caused by working hard. It's caused by effort without recovery, control, or meaning.
  • The cynicism phase feels like clear-sightedness. That's the tell.
  • A vacation that fixes it wasn't burnout. A vacation that fades within four days was.

The basics

  • Three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization/cynicism, and reduced sense of accomplishment.
  • Body signature: broken sleep despite fatigue, appetite swing, tension headaches, frequent minor illness, shortened fuse.
  • It's an occupational phenomenon, not a personal weakness — but the recovery is still yours to run.

The framework

Load, control, recovery

Burnout is a ratio, not a total. Track the three inputs rather than the hours.

  1. 01

Load: volume, stakes, and emotional labour of the work.

  2. 02

Control: how much say you have over how and when it happens.

  3. 03

Recovery: genuine detachment — not scrolling, not on-call rest.

The playbook

The conversation — what to actually say

With your manager

“I want to keep doing good work here, and my current load isn't sustainable. Can we look at what comes off the list or what gets more time?”

With a partner

“I'm not withdrawing from you. I'm running empty, and I need help protecting two evenings a week.”

With yourself

“What would I tell someone I love who described these exact symptoms?”

The mistakes — what people get wrong

  • Treating burnout with more optimization. Better systems on top of an unsustainable load make it last longer.
  • Waiting for permission to rest until you collapse.
  • Confusing burnout with depression — and treating either with a weekend.
  • Quitting into an identical job at a new logo.

Ask yourself

  • When did I last feel genuinely absorbed in something?
  • Which part of my week am I dreading on Sunday night?
  • If nothing changed for another year, what would that cost me?
