How to end a relationship kindly

“Cruelty at the end is rarely intended; it's what happens when kindness is left to improvise.”

A decent ending is clear, in person, unhurried, and free of false hope — followed by real distance and a serious look at what you learned.

We're given elaborate rituals for starting relationships and almost none for ending them, so we improvise — usually badly.

The mistakes — what people get wrong

  • Ending things by text or by becoming unbearable so they leave first — both are cowardice with better PR.
  • Ambiguous language ('a break', 'some space') to soften the blow. It reliably doubles the pain.
